So, I was sitting in my Professional Selling class the other day, bored out of my mind. Ok, so maybe I should be paying attention. WHATEVER… And, they’re teaching us how to “use our student email”… I’m sorry, but I grew up with computers, so I know how to use email.
But, this brought up a thought. Sometimes it’s a good idea to refresh ourselves with what we learned many years ago. For instance, as a photographer its good for us to revisit the basics and refresh our knowledge on how to pull off a great shot.
Some things to focus on:
- Reading the Histogram correctly
- Composition
- Correct Lighting
- Natural Ambient Light
- On-Camera Flash (not the pop-up flash of death)
- Off-Camera Flash
- Once you discover soft, directional lighting you’ll understand why it is so much better than having a small flash on top of your camera.
- How to use your gear efficiently and effectively
- Learn to get away from the Auto Modes. I use Manual Mode 100% of the time, work your way to full manual by using shutter priority or aperture priority. With full control over your images your creativity is not limited by what the camera “thinks” the picture should look like
- Nailing exposure
If you master those things, I can guarantee you’ll take much better pictures. Even if you just have a small Point ‘n Shoot camera. Those cameras do limit you some, but many of the newer ones give you the manual controls. At first it will be tough to transition to choosing everything, but once you get the hang of it you’ll never go back.
If anyone wants more information leave a comment on this post, and I’ll make another post with more detailed information. I might do a little video series to help teach people how to use their gear properly.
